Abstract:

My talk will reflect on the impact of AI on the architecture, engineering, and construction sector, and present examples of relevant design science research conducted at ICD/CA. Major themes are (1) spatial reasoning, a challenge that current AI models struggle with and that ICD/CA aims to address with its research, and (2) the challenge of and the use of AI for sustainable design.

Bio:

Professor Thomas Wortmann directs the Department for Computing in Architecture at the Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD/CA), University of Stuttgart. He holds a Master of Architecture from University of Kassel, a Master of Science in Design and Computation from MIT, and a PhD in Architecture and Sustainable Design from Singapore University of Technology and Design. He researches the application of artificial intelligence to (1) performance-informed design, (2) building representation and generation, (3) material-informed design, and (4) multi-actor fabrication and human-robot collaboration and leads the development of Opossum, a machine-learning based optimization tool with around 20.000 downloads.

This is a WebEx talk to which everyone who is interested is cordially invited. It will take place in English. Our IRIS speaker, Prof. Maria Wirzberger, will moderate it. Following Prof. Thomas Wortmann's presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions. We look forward to active participation.
